May 22 – Drumheller, Ab
Headed out at 8:00am, just as planned. This is our third year trying to do our cross Canada trip, Ken has worked hard planning our journey, praying all will go well!
Here we go!
Horseshoe Canyon. Did some hiking down into the canyon
This Dino was in town at the info center, there are stairs inside to climb up, 101 stairs, unfortunately, they were closed when we went there☹️
Stayed at River Grove Campground in Drumheller. A small campground by the Red Deer River. A great little burger place was on the agenda that night, Bernie and The Boys Bistro. It came highly recommended but it was a hot night and no a/c and no beer. We walked to a nice little family restaurant called Sublime Bistro, located in an old house and had a great meal.
Next morning was another nice walk to another recommended restaurant, Whif’s Flapjack House and great pancakes and waffles.
We are now off to Dinosaur Provincial Park near Brooks. On the way we did the Hoodoo Drive.
Stopped at an old Coal Mine on the way. Coal was big industry around this area for many years back to 1884. The first guy to discover the coal was Joseph Tyrell a geologist, and when he saw the seam, he stumbled backward over a skull of an Albertosaurus. Drumheller was born! This coal area was the largest in North America.
Atlas Coal Mine
Dinosaur Provincial Park is a great place to camp. An abundance of great scenery, hiking trails and wildlife. We did 5 short hikes and did some biking around the Park
On our way the next morning to Saskatchewan but a curious sign as we left the Park
Wow! Off to a great start! Now I want to go down to Drumheller and the Dinosaur park. We have pictures at that little church with Mom and Dad back in the 60’s! Still looks the same. 😉 Yeah, save the snakes….NOT!! Ha, ha.
It’s so great to see you two are finally on your trip, enjoying such awesome sights! Your photos are great! I’d forgotten how really lovely & amazing it was at that museum (we took the ‘kids’ there when they were little) Happy Travels!
